Tom, a lonely bookstore owner, meets Sandra, a doctoral student. They fall in love, but Sandra soon reveals her brother is in deep trouble with a debt of $350,000. Out of love, Tom gives her the money from his wealthy father's estate. Sandra vanishes immediately after.

In a final confrontation, the characters are brought together by Tipsy (an accomplice). In a chaotic scene, Tom is seemingly shot and killed by Max during a struggle over the money. Panicked, Madeline and Max sign over the Hobbes fortune to Sandra (who was working with Tom) to buy her silence and escape.
