The most cherished part of the Wheel’s history began with , a Greek immigrant who arrived in New York and met his future wife, Lula, while selling hot dogs from a pushcart. During their dates at Coney Island, Denos made a bold promise: though he couldn't afford a wedding ring, he pointed to the towering 150-foot Ferris wheel and told her, "I'll buy you that one day". Decades later, in , Denos finally fulfilled his promise by purchasing the ride from its original owner, Fred Garms, for $250,000. When the keys were handed over, there were no official manuals or operating blueprints.
