The story begins with (the player) and his best friend Jowy , members of the Highland Kingdom’s "Unicorn Youth Brigade." Their own commander, Prince Luca Blight , slaughters the brigade in a "false flag" attack to frame the neighboring Jowston Alliance and justify a full-scale invasion. Forced to jump into a river to survive, Riou and Jowy are separated, eventually reuniting but forever marked by the war's trauma. The Runes of Fate : If the player recruits all 108 Stars
