The documentary explores several dark chapters, including the backdating of stock options, the harsh conditions at Foxconn factories, and Jobs’ initial denial of paternity for his daughter, Lisa. By juxtaposing these controversies with the transcendental, almost religious devotion of Apple fans, Gibney asks a provocative question: why do we forgive the "Great Man" for being a "Bad Man"?

The "Machine" in the title serves a dual purpose. It refers to the sleek, user-friendly devices that redefined modern communication, but it also points to the rigid, uncompromising personality of the man behind them. Gibney uses archival footage and candid interviews with former colleagues and partners—many of whom bear visible scars from their time with him—to paint a portrait of a man who sought to "dent the universe" but often bruised the people in his immediate orbit.

Alex Gibney’s 2015 documentary, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine , offers a cold, clinical autopsy of the Apple co-founder’s legacy, deliberately pivoting away from the hagiography often found in tech biopics. Rather than celebrating the "genius" in a vacuum, the film interrogates the massive emotional discrepancy between the global mourning of Jobs’ death and the often-ruthless reality of his personal and professional conduct.

Ultimately, The Man in the Machine is less a biography and more an exploration of our own relationship with technology. It suggests that while Jobs gave us the tools to connect with the world, his own life was marked by a profound, sometimes chilling, disconnect.

My Paris Agenda 🇫🇷 This is one of my favorite pos My Paris Agenda 🇫🇷

This is one of my favorite posts to write because it explains the why behind my trips.

For the last few years, I have planned a January trip to Paris. After a busy fourth quarter, it is my time to reset. I go to think. To plan the year ahead. To set personal and professional goals. I start slowly and ease into the year.

For those who are new here, I thought this might answer a few questions about what my trips actually look like. How I plan my days. What I prioritize. Even how I budget for them.

Plus, a little preview of what is to come in 2026!

Curious what a trip to Paris looks like for me?
