Shmelev’s writing changed drastically after the 1917 Revolution and the execution of his son, Sergey, by the Bolsheviks in 1921. He emigrated to France in 1922, where he became a leading figure of the Russian diaspora, though he lived his final years in near poverty before passing away in 1950.
