The organization is built on a massive misunderstanding. Cid, who is obsessed with being a "mastermind in the shadows," believes the Cult of Diablos is a fictional scenario he made up for roleplay. He views his subordinates as friends who are simply humoring his "Chunibyou" (delusional) fantasies. In reality, the Cult is very real, and his followers are genuinely saving the world based on his "fabricated" stories, which happen to be entirely true. The "Seven Shadows" (or Seven Shades) are the original members personally trained by Shadow. They were all young girls rescued from "Possession"—a horrific condition caused by overloaded mana—and cured by Cid's magic.
