The story follows (Mads Mikkelsen), a stoic, emotionally repressed soldier who returns home from deployment after his wife is killed in a tragic train accident. While Markus is prepared to accept it as a random tragedy, he is approached by Otto (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a statistics expert and fellow survivor who is convinced the crash was a coordinated hit by a criminal gang called the "Riders of Justice".
