The 1995 crime drama (originally titled La Haine ) is a stark, black-and-white masterpiece that follows 24 hours in the lives of three friends in the impoverished banlieues (suburbs) of Paris.

Throughout the day, the handgun Vinz possesses acts as a "ticking time bomb." While Vinz poses as a hardened gangster, Hubert attempts to steer him away from the path of murder.
As the trio returns to their suburb the following morning, they are accosted by a plainclothes officer they had taunted earlier. In the ensuing struggle, the officer’s gun accidentally discharges, killing Vinz instantly. The film concludes with a final standoff as Hubert and the policeman point their weapons at each other. The screen cuts to black as a final shot rings out, leaving the ultimate survivor unknown.
