The story begins in near the Mongolian border, where massive fossils of unknown creatures are discovered in the Kunlun Mountains. A government excavation team, led by Professor Yang and including a young soldier named Hu Bayi, explores the caves only to be struck by a freak explosion and attacked by lethal, glowing blue bats.
The survivors discover a mysterious (or Cyclopean Temple) that serves as an interdimensional portal, releasing ancient, ravenous beasts. Years later, Hu Bayi, now living a quiet life as a librarian, is pulled back into the mystery when Professor Yang is found alive and a Northern Chinese town is ravaged by the same giant creatures.
