High-powered criminal defense attorney Hugh Creighton discovers his live-in girlfriend, former rock star Marcy Edwards, is having an affair with her former drummer, Neddy Malcolm. When Creighton attempts to end the relationship, Marcy blackmails him for $5 million, threatening to expose his history of illegal legal tactics, including bribery of police and judges.

To preserve his reputation, Creighton murders Marcy at her beach house and frames her lover. His elaborate alibi involves a "speed-trap" photo; an accomplice (his assistant, Trish Fairbanks) drives his car past a camera while wearing a realistic mask of Creighton's face. Lieutenant Columbo must dismantle this seemingly perfect alibi, eventually proving that the person in the speeding ticket photo is wearing a mask by demonstrating the lack of a natural shadow under the nose.
