Plot Overview In the year 2154, humans have depleted Earth’s resources and traveled to Pandora , a lush, habitable moon in the Alpha Centauri system, to mine a precious mineral called unobtanium . Because Pandora’s atmosphere is toxic to humans, scientists use "avatars"—genetically engineered Na'vi-human hybrids—remotely operated by humans.
(played by Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former Marine, replaces his deceased twin brother in the Avatar Program. While exploring Pandora, Jake is rescued by Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), a member of the indigenous Omaticaya clan, who begins teaching him the Na'vi ways.
