Lack the red throat, possessing instead a whitish throat and underparts.

This species is exceptionally small, measuring approximately 7–9 cm in length with a wingspan of about 10 cm. Adults typically weigh between 2 and 6 grams. Coloration: Both sexes feature iridescent green upperparts.

Distinguished by a brilliant, ruby-red iridescent throat (gorget) that can appear black in certain lighting.
