The story follows 17-year-old , a rebellious and self-destructive teenager who is sent by her indifferent mother to live with her grandparents in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, for the summer. Suffering from depression and a fixation on suicide, Greta keeps a journal of "exit plans" and tells her grandparents she intends to end her life before the summer ends.
