We meet Saichi "The Immortal" Sugimoto, a war veteran panning for gold to fulfill a dying friend's wish. He hears a wild story about a massive Ainu treasure—and the map to find it is tattooed on the skins of escaped convicts.

The episode earns its title when a man-eating bear (a wenkamuy in Ainu culture) hunts Sugimoto, showing just how brutal the Hokkaido wilderness can be.

Sugimoto is saved by Asirpa , a highly skilled Ainu girl. Her knowledge of the land and her bow are the only things standing between Sugimoto and certain death.
